U-M Mobile Apps Center

Winners in Fall 2010 U-M Mobile Apps Challenge

The Fall 2010 Mobile Apps Challenge promoted entrepreneurial thinking and encouraged the U-M community to develop innovative mobile applications. U-M students, faculty, and staff entered more than 20 apps in four platform categories: iPhone, Android, Windows, and web applications.

Winning App - HiJack

Ye-sheng Kuo, a Graduate Student Instructor in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and his colleagues developed HiJack. It's a hardware/software platform for creating cubic-inch sensor peripherals for the mobile phone. HiJack devices harvest power and use bandwidth from the mobile phone's headset interface. The HiJack platform enables the development of a new class of small and inexpensive phone-centric, sensor-based peripherals that support plug-and-play operation.

The winning device has three sensor boards: 1) a simple demo board with temperature/humidity sensors, PIR motion sensor, and potentiometer, 2) a 3-lead EKG sensor, and 3) a basic soil moisture sensor. Potentially, the platform could include a broad range of sensor boards, such as ozone, carbon monoxide, DVM, blood pressure, blood glucose, and more.
